Sooo I’m in Spain. I’ve almost been here for a week now, so I’m definitely overdue to start the writing side of this blog. I’m here studying at the University of Seville to improve my Spanish skills. But also to learn about culture (read: eat and drink). I flew into Madrid on Sunday morning at dawn and fell in love with Spain immediately.
So that was all good and dandy, but when I got to the hotel my cards wouldn’t work (even though I had cleared them with my credit union before I left), so I had to use the Metro to find the only open exchange place (being Sunday) in town, got screwed over on rates, got lost on my way back, etc. But I finally made it back ok, took an hour-long bath, and met up with some people from my program.
While I didn’t love Madrid, I had a great time during my three days there and learned a lot about the Spanish people. They are very passionate - couples kiss on the Metro and are a little more open about their affection. They don’t have much patience for foreigners who don’t attempt to speak Spanish. The American idea of “customer service” doesn’t exist. That isn’t to say waiters are always rude to people, it’s just that their world does not revolve around you.
Also, blonde hair is very rare. My friend, who has darker skin (and awesome, big curly black hair), and I were walking around Madrid one morning getting coffee and pastries and we got so. many. stares. She joked that it was probably because our skin tones made us look like an oreo, and blondes or dark-skinned people aren’t that common in Madrid, but people - especially guys - would just blatantly stare for a full five minutes.
Despite weird looks, we had a good time in Madrid, especially after visiting an art museum and the royal palace. Then we headed to Toledo, which is south of Madrid, on our way to Sevilla. Toledo was right out of a fairly-tale book, with castles, synagogues and cathedrals. Now I’m in Sevilla with my host family, who is amazing. Sevilla is amazing. More to come soon!
